Meet the founder…

Hi! I’m Lynda from Lilly Pilly Soapery, located in the small Wheatbelt town of Wickepin, WA.

Lilly Pilly Soapery was born out of a love of good handmade soap.

After “going bush” in 2016, I was struggling to find anything other than store bought soap. Complaining to my friend Skye about it over coffee one morning presented a solution. She used to make her own soap, and was happy to show me how!

All it took was one lesson for me to be hooked. Pretty soon I was trying out different oils, butters and milks, learning what properties each ingredient brought to the soap and how they were good (or not-so-good!) for your skin. I was committed to creating a soap that didn't leave my skin feeling dry and tight after use. Many months and countless batches of (often failed) soap later, I finally found the right combination of ingredients.

During this experimentation phase, I learned that soap could LOOK good as well as feel good. Soap as art? I was truly in soapy heaven!

And now, I get to share my love of good quality, pretty soap with you. Lilly Pilly Soapery artisan soap truly is affordable luxury in the palm of your hand.

With love and suds,
Lynda

FAQs

Is Lilly Pilly Soapery soap natural?

The term "natural" is not regulated, and therefore many soap makers claim their products are just that. However, here at Lilly Pilly Soapery, we value honesty. As our artisan soap is made with fragrance oils for scent and mica powder for colour, we won't in good conscience claim the "natural" tag, despite our soap being made with real oils, real butters and real milks. We do not use synthetic detergents or artificial hardeners - when you read our list of ingredients, you can pronounce every single one. Our plain milk soaps, which are fragrance and colour free, are 100% natural.

Do you use sodium hydroxide?

Yes. Traditional soap cannot be made without it. The sodium hydroxide reacts with the fat in the oils in a magical process known as saponification. Once saponification is complete, there is no sodium hydroxide left....just soap! If a soap maker tells you they don't use sodium hydroxide, or that they make "soap free soap", it means they're using synthetic detergents. Morning Fresh, anyone?

Why should I bother buying handmade soap?

The difference between handmade and store bought soap is like the difference between instant and barista made coffee. They both do the same job, but one is definitely more luxurious than the other! There’s certainly no denying Lilly Pilly Soapery soap feels, smells, and looks so much better than store bought soap. It’s definitely affordable luxury in the palm of your hand!

My soap looks different to the picture. Why?

Lilly Pilly Soapery is artisan soap, meaning it’s handmade in small batches. Each batch, and indeed each bar, is unique. While we try our best to keep subsequent batches similar to the images displayed on the website, it’s impossible to make every bar look the same. Even when the same colours and the same pouring technique are used, artisan soap has a habit of surprising you when you cut it…it’s all part of the fun!

How long will my order take to be sent?

We know what it’s like to eagerly await delivery of your goodies. Therefore, we will endeavour to process your order within 5 business days of receiving it. If for some reason there’s going to be a significant delay in shipping, we will attempt to inform you via the email address you provide to us.

Handmade soap doesn’t last as long as store bought soap. Why?

Handmade soap has a reputation for not lasting as long as store bought soap, but this is not necessarily the case. There are several things that contribute to soap longevity. Firstly, hardeners. These substances harden the bars and make them last longer, However, they can cause skin irritation and make you more sensitive to allergins. Here at Lilly Pilly Soapery we don’t use artificial hardeners in our soap, unlike many commercially made soaps. This is a good thing for you, and your skin. Secondly, and more importantly, handmade soap contains glycerin, which is generally removed from commercially made soap and sold for use in beauty products. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it locks in moisture. This is fantastic for your skin, but can cause your soap to be softer than store bought. So, if you leave your soap sitting in a wet soap dish, it will turn into a gooey mess. Let your Lilly Pilly Soapery soap dry out between uses, and you may be surprised just how long the bar lasts!

Does the soap have an expiry date?

Soap has no expiry date, and in actual fact, improves over time. If you’ve kept your soap for a very long time, you may notice some discolouring - usually in the form of orange spots. This simply means the oils have become a little old. It is purely cosmetic, and the soap is still fine to use. (Of course, in the unlikely event you have any sort of adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately.) Here at Lilly Pilly Soapery we use only quality oils, known for their longevity, so you shouldn’t notice any discolouration under normal conditions. That is, unless you come across that bar of soap you forgot about in your undies drawer!
